Rex of Rags is an RPG I'm working on in preparation for Cairn Hill. I just want a little more experience under my belt before I really tackle Cairn Hill, since I expect it to be quite a major project. This way, I hope to get a better idea of what it's like to write an RPG, see what works, see what doesn't.
That said, I do intend this to be a game which is enjoyable in itself; Rex of Rags is not merely a Cairn Hill crash-test. When complete, I will release this game into the Public Domain.
In Rex of Rags, you play Rex, former street-person, now doing odd jobs for a travelling circus. "Odd" is certainly the right word for them: over the course of your employment you'll find yourself knocking over CNN broadcast towers, freeing zoo animals into the North American wilderness (i.e., suburbia), and picking bar-fights with homophobic rednecks. According to the circus' ring-master and manager, all this is public relations work, although from what you can see, the ring-master is simply insane; but whatever his motives, a job's a job, and you'll do yours.
The game is divided into distinct circus phases and town phases (you can look at these as "preparation" and "action" phases). In the circus phase you'll receive your instructions from the ring-master, buy things, and pick up tricks and advice from your fellow circus-hands. In the town phase, you'll venture into whatever city the circus has travelled to, and engage in some "public relations".
The circus phase should look more-or-less like this pseudo-screenshot. The town phase will look wild and crazy, so wild and crazy, in fact, that I can't even describe it to you. Combat will be very simplistic, but will require strategy.
To put it in a nutshell, it's a strategy RPG, with a wacky plot, and an odd combat engine.
Basic walking-around and talking to people engine. Nothing much more than that.
As always, if you have anything to say, please feel free to e-mail me at jihgfed@hotmail.com; alternately, you could post something at the Cairn Hill forum, if for whatever reason you'd prefer to do that.
